Teja Main Hoon, Mark Idhar Hai

From flop to cult film

It’s been over two decades since the release of this epic movie and yet somehow the movie has not lost its charm. Now considered a cult-movie, Andaz apna apna is one of the funniest movies ever made in Bollywood. The duo of Aamir and Salman has taken this comedy of error to another level with their quirkiness

How can anyone forget the epic dialogue "Sorry sir, galti se mistake hogaya!" I remember watching this movie when I was a kid and couldn't stop talking about it for weeks and laughing out loud remembering every scene. It was ironic, the movie when released was declared a flop. But over these years, it has become the most spoken about movie and there is almost no dull moment in the movie.

The movie will keep you fixed to your seat right till the end and you will still be craving for more. The slapstick comedy of the movie was a revelation from Raj Kumar Santoshi, known till then for his genuinely honest effort in Damini. He hasn’t been able to create another Andaz Apna Apna since then.

Yeh bundook Vasco da Gama ki hai. Kiska mama?
As if you haven’t watched the movie already, here’s the story: Raveena and Karishma have come in search for their respective Mr. Right. Raveena wants his Mr. Right to love her and not her wealth. To put everyone to test, she has switched her name with Karishma. Amar and Prem, small-town guys with big dreams, approach them and manage to win their hearts. The problem lies in Raveena’s khadoos dad Ram Gopal Bajaj. To add to the confusion Ram has a twin evil brother Shyam aka Teja, who is out to loot his wealth and kill him and his daughter. How the girls manage to escape from him and win their dad’s trust to marry Amar and Prem is all the movie is about. Watch it if you haven’t already. And watch it again if you have already.
Yeh Teja Teja kya hai? Yeh Teja Teja?
The performances
Amir Khan – He literally was the feel good factor of the movie. He acts as the bolder of the two buddies and is a real smart guy. At the same time he was the funnier of the two with dialogues like chit mai jeeta pat tu hara. Acha thik hai pat tu hara aur chit mai jeeta. And his favourite dialogue:

Aap mahaan hai,

Shaktimaan hai,
Buddhimaan hai,
Keertimaan hai,
Gyani hai,
Daani hai,
Antaryaami hai,
Balki… balki main to yeh kahoonga ki aap purush hi nahi,
Mahapurush hai… mahapurush!
Absolutely hilarious!

Do dost ek pyaali main chai piyenge. Isse pyar badhta hai.
Salman Khan – Who could have acted as dumb as he did? If you want dumbness personified, go and ask Salman how he played the character of Prem. His trademark ouyi maa almost became a rage with viewers. His best scene is the one where he is shown as Ram and Amir as Bharat while they both are trying to save themselves from the owner of the lodge.

Dr. Prem Khurana. Is dhande mein bahut purana.
Raveena and Karishma – Both were at the beginning of their respective Bollywood careers and played the roles of inseparable friends falling in love with Amar and Prem. Their pairings with Amir and Salman was apt in the sense that while a bold Raveena was paired with a smart Amar, the shy Karishma was paired with a stupid Prem.

Woh humko teele par mil gaya than a, isliye humne iska naam teelu rakh diya
Paresh Rawal – In the double role of a white coat Ram Gopal Bajaj and a black coat Teja, he was the best comedian you could ask for. Sample his dialogues:

Main Teja hun kyonki mera naam Teja hain. Teja main hun mark idhar hain.

Meri chai kidhar hain? Har cheez time to time honi chahiye
Murgiyon ka badshah aur bread ka sartaaj, Haamaaraaa Bajaaj!

Ye bichhu ka zeher hain. Pinewala 2 hi minute main pila hokar nila ho jata hain. Kifayati aur bharosemand!
Shehzad Khan and Deven Khote – As assistants to Raveena and Karisha, they scheme with Teja to kidnap them. Again, they were given some really good dialogues and Shehzaad Khan should get additional credit for imitating Ajit’s accent and voice.

Aankhen nikaal ke gootiyan kheeloonga
Shakti Kapoor – Would anyone have ever thought that Shakti Kapoor’s most memorable character apart from Balma of Chaalbaaz would be Crime Master Gogo? Some of his attempts at comedy were really good and this was one of them. His imitation fight with Salman Khan towards the end is a delight to watch.

Tum dono ko dekhkar mujhe Ramanand Sagar ki Ramayan ka woh episode yaad aa gaya jisamein Ram aur Bharat ka milap hua tha

They say laughter is the best medicine but I think Andaz Apna Apna is the best medicine and nothing comes closer when you talk about humor in movies.

Villains who ruled the Bollywood

Most hated yet the most beloved.

The dirtier the dialogues, the more real they get and leave the lasting impression on the minds of the viewers. popularly known as the bad guys of Bollywood.
For many years Indian cinema has been a playground for villains. The negative and entertainment aspects of Bollywood villains have always added masala to films.
Villainous characters have generated fear, hatred and power amongst audiences through the iconic roles they have portrayed. On-screen we have seen Bollywood villains evolving in different shades. Many of the bad masters have appeared as smart, crafty, modern, handsome and scary. Sometimes these villains are so badass that they own the movie, and the hero becomes just a mere character. Of course, in Bollywood terms and conditions, the hero always wins, but from the audience perspective, the hero might have won the battle, but lost the war.
Here's a small tribute to the badness of 5 timeless Bollywood villains:
1. Gabbar Singh (Sholay)

This iconic character was played by Amjad Khan. And we are sure that no one could have done a better job with it. You’ll be surprised to know that the first choice for this role was Danny who didn’t have dates to shoot the film. Thus, Amjad was selected. It turned out to be the best decision ever because Sholay wouldn’t have been the same without Gabbar in it.

Iconic dialogue: Yeh haath humko de de Thakur, Joh darr gaya samjho marr gaya , Holi kab hai, kab hai holi.
2. Mogambo (Mr. India)

Believe it or not, one of the reasons Mr. India is still stuck in our heads is because of Mogambo, played by Amrish Puri. Mogambo was completely over the top with a strange costume, a stick and a throne surrounded by his loyalists. He became the very definition of evil. Mogambao was so bad that it made Mr. India (played by Anil Kapoor) a better hero!

Iconic dialogue: Mogambo khush hua

3. Shakaal (Shaan)

Shakaal’s character, played by Kulbhushan Kharbanda, was inspired from the west. This villain was the epitome of coolness. He had his own island with sharks and crocodiles. And fancy gadgets too! He was wicked, but a sophisticated baddie. Though Shaan didn’t do well at the box-office, the audiences haven't forgotten Shakaal.

Iconic Dialogue: Yeh zahreeli gas dheere dheere mehfil ko aur rangeen banati rahegi

3. Kancha Cheena (Agnipath)

With aviators and gelled hair, Danny Denzongpa completely nailed this role. He plays the character of a self-proclaimed under-world don who takes over a village called Mandwa. Although people remember this movie more for Amitabh’s name in it - Vijay Dinanath Chauhan - it's Kancha you remember hatefully.

Iconic Dialogue: Kamzor ki dosti...taqatwar ke vaar ko kam kar deti hai

4. Prem Chopra (Bobby)

This character was played by Prem Chopra, and he was really the baap of all villains. Contrary to his name, he'd always be hitting on girls, forcing himself on them or kidnapping them.
Iconic Dialogue: Prem naam hai mera, Prem Chopra.
5. Dr.Dang (Karma)

This character was played by Anupam Kher and is definitely one of his best performances. He played an educated man who wants to use science to spread terrorism. Kher nails being wicked as hell, making Dr.Dang a memorable villain.

Iconic Dialogue: Iss thappad ki goonj suni tumne? Ab is goonj ki goonj tumhe zindagi bhar sunayi degi.

No matter how forward Indian cinema moves, the Bollywood villain will remain our all time favourite.
So guys, what did you think about the list. Let me know! Did you agree with most of them, or not at all. Whom did I miss, and whom did I not treat well? Comments section is open now. Cheers!

With Great Fame come Great Responsibility

Fame is unstable. Who else can agree with this statement as clearly as celebrities? They know that if they mess up, their fans may lose respect for them in a heartbeat. The celebrities often make the mistake of believing that their fame is the result of some unique quality they possess. Little do they know that they are always replaceable.  While some manage to remain in spotlight due to their work, there are others who attract the eyes of public with their antics. But there is a third category where some celebrities find themselves on the wrong side of the public when a particular statement made by these celebrities doesn’t go down really well with them.
A recent case of the similar kind comes to our attention. Here I’m talking about none other than Salman Khan, often called as ‘Bhai’. The actor recently made headlines for all the wrong reasons. During a press conference for his upcoming movie, he compared his agonizing pain and weariness because of hectic shoots and training sessions to “a raped woman”. It was easily perceived that the comment was not acceptable by the people who know what rape means. It is sad to witness how some people trivialize rape not realizing the trauma through which rape victims go through. Even if the actor used the term rape as a metaphor to describe his taxing wrestling shoots to mark how difficult for him was to go through that training sessions, the comment was still indefensible...

While the country is clearly outraged by the actors remarks, there is a group of people comprising mostly of his die hard fans that are defending him by saying that there's an another side to his remarks which requires the understanding of human psyche. They are defending him by saying that he did not insult any rape survivor nor did he by any means regard rape as a petty issue, he merely compared his gruelling situation with that of raped woman. He was only making an analogy.

Since each and every person is entitled to his/her opinion I will not be arguing whether their statement is correct or not. But I will state my personal views. I personally feel that what the actor said was totally unacceptable and that he shouldn’t have made the comparison to a rape victim. I feel rape is an irreplaceable loss to life not just physically, but emotionally and verbally too and the comment made by the actor just made us acquainted with his incautious attitude towards making the right choice of words. What adds cherry to the pie is the fact that when asked to apologize he swiftly dodged the topic. In the end his father, Mr.Salim Khan resorted to Twitter to apologize on his son's behalf. Now this is what makes me angry yet sad. Salman khan should take responsibility of his words and come forward with an apology. If he doesn't, he is joining to lose quite a large number of fans.
